Wide A Wake first post
Yo all,
So, I have always been interested in steam model marine engines. I built Alexandra, a steam launch from Krick, fitted with a Cheddar steam plant back in 2005. That blog can be found here.
Now that I am retired, I sailed Alexandra a few times and the steam modeling virus came back to haunt me.
I subscribed to a few steam models building blogs (in UK as this is where the real steam modelers are !), and got really impressed with two building blogs of Wide A Wake:
'WIDE A WAKE' a steam launch tale by Ramon
WIDE-A-WAKE LAUNCH FOR STUART TWIN ENGINE
The Wide a Wake model is a replica of a clinker built boat in Australia. The actual size was 25 feet with a 7'6" beam
I never built a clinker boat before, so this could be an interesting experience. Also the overall shape and form of this steam boat are extremely elegant.
The model is at 1/6 scale or 2" for 1 foot. At that scale, the model is 50" long ( 127cm) with a beam of 15" (38.1cm)
The steam engine I am contemplating for that boat is the 3" vertical steam plant from MSM:
3 inch Horizontal Clyde Steam Plan
The 2" to 1 foot model is too big for that steam plant and too big in general. So I am going to build a 3/4 version of the model, ie a 1.5 inches to 1 foot model.
Here is a comparison between a few models:
